What is the ICC Trial Competition?

As the International Criminal Court is firmly in the judicial phase of its activities, awareness of the ICC and the starting trials becomes increasingly relevant. In response ICLN has developed the ICC Trial Competition. Currently, there are a number of established moot court competitions. The ICC Trial Competition will however, be unique in its direct focus on the ICC proceedings and international criminal law. Moreover, the competition will have a distinct structure, allowing students not only to take on the role as prosecutor or defence, as in traditional moot courts, but also the role of judge.

The purpose of the  ICC Trial Competition is threefold:

  1. to allow top law students worldwide to improve their knowledge of the ICC and its proceedings;

  2. to provide students with the opportunity to become familiar with world-famous institutions in The Hague such as the ICC, the ICTY, the OPCW, the International Court of Justice and the Peace Palace Library;

  3. to enhance the backing within countries towards ratification of the Rome Statute by providing top law students from countries that have yet to ratify, an opportunity to learn more about the ICC.

The Advisory Board of The Hague International Criminal Trial Competition consists of:

  • Prof. Michail Wladimiroff, International lawyer and President of ICLN
  • Prof. Goran Sluiter, University of Amsterdam
  • Prof. Matthew Brottman, Pace University
